How do you use your personal Facebook Page?

Do you mix your private life with your business life?

Social media is now prevalent in our lives and we use it to connect on a personal and professional level. The constant updates of Facebook’s algorithm means that our business posts are not getting the views that they once were. But by adding people to our personal feed and sharing our message from there will help it get through.

For me personally, I have a VERY clear line. My personal page is exactly that – personal. This is the place that I choose to share with my family and friends celebrations, holidays, birthdays and my kids achievements. I share some personal stories on my business page and vice versa. But the main of it is separate.

This goes back to when I was working in corporate. I had a policy of not being friends on social media with the people I worked with, unless we had a friendship outside of work. That’s just me. I like to keep the lines separate.

I don’t like to bombard my friends with stories about the current launches I am working on and tips to grow their business. And likewise, I don’t want to share with my business “friends” that I am out for lunch to celebrate my dad’s birthday or that my son just pulled a snake out of the pool filter – I mean do you really care?

And I most definitely don’t need my business friends witnessing a slightly(?) intoxicated version of me riding a mechanical bull in Vegas.

I’m also one of those people that cleans up and lets go of “friends” on social media. I mean if we haven’t connected online or in real life for over 12 months I think it is fair to say we no longer have the things in common that we once had. And I’m ok with that. I’m clearing space so that I am able connect and share with more of the people I love and am interested in.

In fact, anthropologists have confirmed that humans do not have the brain power to maintain relationships if groups grow much larger than 150 people.

15% of all Facebook users have over 500 friends. If we exclude that top 15%, the average number is roughly 200.

I’m below average with 141 friends.

I’m interested to hear your thoughts on this.
